Taiwan Opposition Leader Set for High-Stakes Mainland China Trip

Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), is preparing for a politically significant visit to mainland China next month, as chairwoman Cheng Li-wun leads a delegation from April 7 to 12. Invited by Beijing, the trip will take her to Jiangsu province, Shanghai and Beijing, marking her first mainland visit since taking over the party leadership in November.

According to Song Tao, head of Beijing’s Taiwan Work Office, the purpose of the visit is to promote the peaceful development of relations between the Chinese Communist Party and the KMT, as well as broader ties across the Taiwan Strait. The announcement carries strong political symbolism, especially at a time when cross-strait relations remain tense and deeply sensitive.

The visit is also drawing attention because it could lead to a face-to-face meeting between Cheng and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Cheng has repeatedly expressed interest in such a meeting, and Beijing’s warm public invitation has increased speculation that this could happen.

If realized, the meeting would be seen as a major political signal, highlighting Beijing’s continued engagement with Taiwan’s opposition while wider cross-strait tensions persist.
