Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Wang Yi in New Delhi on Tuesday. Wang Yi is a senior Chinese official and was visiting India to attend a BRICS security meeting.
During their meeting, Modi said that India and China are two ancient civilizations that have shared friendly relations for thousands of years. He noted that both countries were once major powers in the world and said they should continue to strengthen their friendship.
Modi emphasized the importance of regular high-level meetings, practical cooperation, and working together to protect the interests of developing nations, often referred to as the Global South. He also expressed India’s support for China taking over the rotating presidency of BRICS next year and said India is ready to cooperate closely with China to strengthen the group.
Wang Yi said that China and India, as the world’s two largest developing countries and important members of the Global South, should set an example by promoting unity and cooperation among developing nations.
He added that China will support India’s work as the current BRICS chair and is willing to work with India to improve mutual trust, manage sensitive issues carefully, expand beneficial cooperation, maintain positive relations, and support each other’s development and modernization goals.
