Philippine Coast Guard Monitors Chinese Research Vessels Near Scarborough Shoal Amid Rising Maritime Tensions

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has confirmed that it will continue closely monitoring and challenging the presence of two Chinese research vessels operating near Scarborough Shoal, a disputed feature in the South China Sea. The vessels were reportedly engaged in maritime scientific research activities in waters that Manila considers part of its exclusive economic zone.

According to PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela, the agency is actively maintaining maritime domain awareness through a combination of aerial surveillance missions and regular sea patrols. These operations are aimed at tracking foreign vessel movements and ensuring that Philippine sovereignty and maritime rights are upheld in the region.

The PCG emphasized that it remains vigilant amid increasing maritime activity in contested waters, particularly around Scarborough Shoal, which has long been a flashpoint between the Philippines and China. The agency’s monitoring efforts are part of a broader national strategy to assert presence and respond to foreign incursions through lawful and peaceful means.

The statement reflects ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, where overlapping claims continue to drive diplomatic friction and frequent encounters between Philippine and Chinese maritime forces. The PCG reiterated its commitment to safeguarding maritime interests while avoiding escalation, focusing instead on transparency, documentation, and sustained patrol operations.
